Through a secondment role with Oldham Council, LBR Associates has supported Oldham Council as technical lead on the A62 Bridges Refurbishment Scheme.

The scheme involved the structural review, assessment, design, Early Contract Involvement (ECI) and construction of refurbishment works to two bridges forming part of the Key Route Network in Oldham.

The two bridges are a 3-span steel/concrete composite bridge supported on reinforced concrete abutments and intermediate pier supports comprising 6 no. columns and transverse crossheads and a single span filler beam deck constructed on reinforced concrete abutments.
The refurbishment works included concrete repairs (sacrificial anode system and hydrophobic impregnation), bearing replacement, waterproofing replacement, expansion joint replacement, installation of a sub-surface drainage system and paint system renewal.

• Structural review of two bridges in accordance with CS 451 Structural review and assessment of highway structures.

• Development of refurbishment works scope.

• Technical review and approval of assessment and design submissions in accordance with CG 300 Technical approval of highway structures.

• Management of ECI engaging framework contractors, suppliers and design consultants.

• Technical review of design submissions.

• Construction supervision and responding to technical queries (TQs).

Key Outcomes

• The structural review of the two bridges identified short comings in the previous assessments where transverse loading had been discounted and pier impact assessment had not been assessed. It was also identified that the as-built records for each structure were not representative of the bridge. This provided a platform for developing the scope of works from assessment through to design and construction.

• Provision of appropriate assessment and as-builts ensuring knowledge of the two bridges is retained for future asset managers in Oldham.

• ECI ensured that the construction team was on board with the design proposals and that the design was in line with the construction methodology.

• Refurbishment of two structures in Oldham ensuring the design working life is met.
